Naa Oyo A. Kwate is Associate Professor in the Department of Human Ecology and the Department of Africana Studies at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. A clinical psychologist by training, she researches social determinants of African American health, with a focus on experiences with racism and neighborhood resources and disamenities. Her most recent study, funded by the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, investigated the health impact of racism and tested a community-based intervention (RISE, Racism Still Exists) using outdoor advertising to disseminate stark facts about the persistence of racism. Her research has also been funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Department of Defense.
