SUMMARY:2016 Roots\, Rock\, Run 5k
DESCRIPTION:Roots\, Rock\, Run 5k is a GrassROOTS Community Foundation community engagement activity. On June 4th\, GrassROOTS in collaboration with our Chairman of the Board Tarik “Black Thought” Trotter of the The Roots and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon will lead a community 5k walk/run. \n  \nOur goal is to create an interactive fun neighborhood-based health promotion event that reclaims economically depressed neighborhoods and make them inviting health spaces. We also seek to bring awareness of the importance of physical activity and healthier living as well as raise funds to support programs and organizations that make healthier living a priority for impoverished women and girls. \n  \nJune 2016\, marks the 4th year that GrassROOTS Community Foundation has coordinated this event. In total this race has already reached almost 2000 youth and their families. Beginning in 2015 we has offered a 10-week free training program for youth and families in order to prepare them to run in the race. This group of youth will lead the race next to Black Thought. \n  \nRoots\, Rock\, Run 5k is a FUN experience. The day includes musical acts\, face painting\, dance contest\, health screening food vendors and lots more. \n  \nThe program this year includes three musical acts: reggae cover band Jah People\, youth sensations Summer Valentine with DJ Beauty and Devon. DJ Scotty Nevers returns as the event host DJ. \n  \nManaged by Bryn Mawr Racing Company\, the race is timed-course with a photo finished for each participant. Last year’s winner completed the course in less than 19 minutes.
